The incumbent will be a critical, experienced, multi-disciplinary executive member of the advanced analytics leadership team.

The Director is accountable for leading the continuous development of advanced analytics capabilities and uncovering drivers of business and clinical operations and performance.

Advanced Analytics at OGS, part of the UnitedHealth Group family of businesses, is built on a consultative analytics support culture. As a senior leader, the Director ensures collaborative partnerships with leaders across the enterprise. Through routine, direct engagement with executive leadership, the Director’s team provides analytically-supported, actionable, strategic, and tactical solution recommendations for complex business and clinical problems.

Incumbent should bring together a diverse set of executive skills and experience, including advanced analytics tools and methods, business acumen, management consulting, and professional services/analytics-based knowledge delivery practices, to continuously transform OGS’ knowledge-driven decision-support capabilities. He/She should be able to leveraging data and analytics across healthcare chain, that is Pharma/Life Sciences, PBM, Payers and providers, to identify opportunities to improve the quality and/or cost of care from an affordability, clinical, payment integrity and population health basis.


The Director leverages this experience to lead multiple teams of highly-skilled analytics managers and expert analysts. Under the Director’s/Associate Director’s leadership the Analytics Practice seek to translate complex findings into consumable, value-added recommendations in support of strategic and tactical initiatives across the enterprise.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead the advanced analytics development and consulting function consisting of multiple teams of highly-skilled business and clinical analysts

  • Leverage care delivery outcomes, claims experience, utilization, quality, membership, demographic, lifestyle, and other data sources across the enterprise to derive knowledge of drivers of enterprise business and clinical performance

  • Provide strategic and tactical consulting services/recommendations that improve performance and demonstrate value for executive and senior leadership

  • Collaborate daily with executive and senior leaders to determine and prioritize the need for new, complex business, clinical, and operational analyses, simulation models, performance and quality metrics, or regulatory reporting requirements

  • Effectively hire, train, orient, coach/develop, and retain analytics team members capable of providing both advanced analytics and business consulting services

  • Successfully direct a team of advanced analytics and clinical experts in the discovery and delivery of analytics-driven knowledge to support business, clinical, and operational decision-making and to satisfy quality and regulatory reporting requirements

  • Enhance the power and utility of business, clinical, operational, and quality analyses by continuously assessing the value of new data sources (both internal and external), methods, and visualizations

  • Drive the visibility and value proposition (brand) of the analytics function by leading complex analytic support for, and routinely delivering results and strategic and tactical recommendations to, executives, department leaders, and initiative sponsors across the enterprise

  • Communicate knowledge discovered by the advanced analytics team to key leaders in order to facilitate adoption of a knowledge-driven culture across the enterprise

  • Recommend tools, methods, and skill sets for adoption in order to develop and maintain leading edge analytics capabilities

  • Maintain knowledge of recent developments in “big data” analytics applications in healthcare


Required Qualifications:

  • B.Pharma/BE/MBBS

  • MBA/M.Pharma/MD/MS/M.Sc (Science)

  • Minimum 10 years of leadership experience leveraging advanced analytics methods and very-large scale information systems

  • Experience across Life Sciences, Payers, PBMs and provider side of the business

  • Experience engaging with, presenting analytically-derived findings to, and influencing strategic and tactical decision-making among executive leadership, including at the C-level

  • Experience with data access tools such as SQL and statistical analysis/modeling tools such as R, SAS, AnyLogic, RapidMiner, Mathematica, or similar applications

  • Experience building, leading, developing, and retaining teams of highly-skilled, quantitative analysis staff with diverse educational and experiential backgrounds

  • Experience with data access tools such as SQL, statistical analysis/modeling tools including SAS, R, or similar applications, and data visualization tools such as Tableau. Ability to effectively mentor staff in the application of these tools to independently solve real-world problems and delivery findings

  • Prior hands-on experience developing, applying, and interpreting results from successful (i.e., practical and impactful) complex analytics projects

  • Demonstrated success building and leading highly-skilled, multi-disciplinary, advanced analytics teams

  • Demonstrated expertise re: information technology, Big Data structures, and application of advanced analytics for business and clinical analysis, operations analysis, and business process modeling

  • Understanding of HIPAA and other applicable statutes or regulations concerning patient privacy and appropriate use and sharing of healthcare data

  • Strong leadership, communication, and project planning skills

  • Expert understanding of data structures to support application of advanced analytics tools for business, clinical, operations, and quality analysis

  • Organizational skills to successfully prioritize and operate on a wide range of topics and projects at one time with superior attention to detail

  • Business and management consulting acumen to discern and deliver analytic findings with practical value to clinical, business, and operational teams and executive leaders

  • Ability to effectively communicate to customers, including executive leadership, the practical implications of, and recommendations derived from, complex analyses. Must be able to mentor staff regarding effective verbal and written communication of complex analytical results to a wide variety of audiences

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least 5 years of experience applying advanced analytics tools and methods to healthcare claims and/or care delivery data to support business activities

  • At least 5 years of experience in a healthcare operations environment (health system or insurer)

  • Experience with Six Sigma, LEAN or similar process improvement approaches

  • Experience with analytics development and delivery best practices in Pharma/Life Sciences Industry

  • Application of advanced analytics methods to healthcare delivery or insurance problems
